Sine Die on the 2024 Utah Legislative Session
The 2024 Utah Legislative Session ended Friday, March 1, 2024. For 45 days we have been engaged, advocating for public education. Just when you think you know what to expect from a session, a legislator creates a piece of legislation that has us all wondering. This session did not disappoint. I’ve reflected throughout the session and though I would share a few of my thoughts –
It was great to hold our JLC meetings at Granite again this year. The conversation was focused on supporting bills that helped schools and opposing bills that would not help students, staff, or schools. Each week we had about 80 people attend our meeting.
Thank you for participating in our USBA Days on the Hill. It was great to see so many of you up on the Hill advocating for public education.
Legislators requested 1,487 bills. 934 were introduced and 591 eventually passed. During our JLC meetings we discussed 90 bills, supporting 40 and opposing 39.
Our senators and representatives were very busy this session. One senator worked over 30 bills this session.
Both the House Education Committee and the Senate Education Committee heard 75 bills in their meetings this session. Most of the bills were passed out so they could be heard on the House or Senate floor.
A special thanks to our USBA, USSA, and UASBO leadership for making JLC work this year. They all did a great job.
As this year ends, I’m already thinking about next session and the role we will play. Thank you for participating this year and being great advocates for our schools and districts.
